As part of our Civil War study, we also visited The 1864 Hunley (housed in Charleston, SC): the first submarine to ever successfully be used in combat. This confederate submarine sunk the USS Housatonic in the Charleston Harbor while it was blockading the city. The submarine–and its men–were never seen again until excavation brought it back to light in 2000.

Save the Hunley!
Inside a replica of the Hunley.
So excited to get to speak with Dr. Lee himself! Dr. Lee led the marine excavation of the Hunley in 2000 and can be found in numerous documentaries filmed both during and after the Hunley excavation.
