Pennsylvania History + Civil War:

Landon’s study of Pennsylvania this year focused heavily on its role in the Civil War. He also completed a study of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who lived in Pennsylvania for most of his adult life.

Resources used:
- Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, PA
- Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg, PA
- Khan Academy (website)
- Who was Abraham Lincoln? (book)
- I Survived: The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863 (book)
- Magic Tree House: Abe Lincoln at Last! (book)

As part of our Civil War study, we also visited The 1864 Hunley (housed in Charleston, SC): the first submarine to ever successfully be used in combat. This confederate submarine sunk the USS Housatonic in the Charleston Harbor while it was blockading the city. The submarine–and its men–were never seen again until excavation brought it back to light in 2000.
